ADHD

ADHD is not a deficit of attention. That name has caused a lot of confusion.

It's more accurate to say ADHD is a difference in how attention is regulated. People with ADHD can often focus with ferocious intensity on things that interest them — sometimes for hours, forgetting to eat. What they struggle with is directing attention to things the brain has decided are boring. Even when those things matter. Even when the consequences of not doing them are real.

This is why "just try harder" has never worked and never will. The effort isn't missing. The mechanism that converts effort into sustained focus on non-preferred tasks is working differently.

Adult ADHD often goes unrecognized for a long time, especially in people who are smart, who found workarounds in school, who mask well, or who were raised as girls. What finally brings people in is often a life change — a promotion that adds executive function demands, a kid, a relationship where the old workarounds stop working. The diagnosis can arrive in someone's thirties or forties and feel like both a revelation and a grief. This was a real thing. I wasn't lazy. I also spent decades thinking I was lazy.

Working with ADHD as an adult is not about fixing the ADHD. It's about understanding how your specific brain works, building systems that fit that brain, letting go of the ones that never did, and — often — grieving the version of yourself you tried to be. The productivity culture you grew up in was not designed for you. Many of the things you assumed were character flaws were neurology.

Medication helps some people substantially. Others do well without it. Therapy tends to help either way, because the emotional layer — the internalized shame, the relationship wear, the identity reshuffling — doesn't resolve just because focus does.

You are not broken. You have been running a different operating system, probably on hardware that wasn't designed for it.
